The seat of Pennsylvania's government in Harrisburg is among the most lavishly decorated statehouses in the country. Dedicated in 1906 and designed by Joseph Huston in an Italian Renaissance manner, its most striking feature is a green-tiled dome inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Inside, a sweeping marble staircase modeled on the Paris Opera leads through halls filled with murals by Violet Oakley, tiled floors by Henry Chapman Mercer, and stained glass.
