The Mar Behnam Monastery, southeast of Mosul, is an ancient Syriac Christian monastery whose origins are traditionally placed in the early centuries of the faith. Built in stone, it is celebrated for the intricately carved doorways and inscriptions of its church, executed in several languages and blending Christian imagery with regional styles. Damaged in recent conflict and partly restored, it remains a monument to the long Christian presence in Nineveh. Visitors can examine the carved reliefs, domed shrine, and fortified walls.
