The Al-Nuri Mosque in the old city of Mosul is a historic congregational mosque founded in the twelfth century and long famous for its leaning minaret. That tower, nicknamed the hunchback for its distinctive tilt, was a symbol of the city until its destruction in recent conflict, and reconstruction has since sought to restore the mosque and its minaret. The site is bound up with the medieval and modern history of Mosul. Visitors to the rebuilt complex can view the restored prayer hall and minaret central to the city's identity.
