A mosque on the shore of the Caspian Sea just south of Baku, rebuilt in the 1990s as a faithful reconstruction of a 13th-century shrine destroyed in the Soviet period. The original was regarded as one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the region, marking the burial place of a descendant of a Shia imam. The domes and minarets of the restored mosque rise above the coastal road, decorated inside with fine tilework and calligraphy. It has resumed its role as a major religious site and a landmark on the approach to the capital.
