This residence castle rises at the edge of one of Germany's best-preserved timber-framed old towns and served as the seat of the dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Founded as a medieval fortress, it was transformed into a Renaissance and Baroque palace, and its chapel retains rare sixteenth-century painted decoration. The castle houses a small Baroque theatre still used for performances. A distinctive detail is the court chapel, whose galleries and altar survive almost untouched from the Reformation era.
