A Franciscan friary founded in 1465 by Cormac MacCarthy, lord of Muskerry, in the valley of the Bride river west of Cork. The roofless church, tower and cloister survive in substantial form, with a graveyard that holds the tomb of the outlaw Art Ó Laoghaire, subject of a celebrated Irish lament. Slender pointed windows and a narrow spiral stair lead through the ruins. The setting among quiet farmland, near the ruined MacCarthy castle nearby, makes it a favoured stop for those tracing Gaelic heritage.
